What do medical appointments, public speaking, or preparing for a trip have in common? They can all make you feel worried or uneasy. GABA is an amino acid that has been clinically studied to help relieve occasional stress and promote a relaxed state of mind, balanced mood and better sleep. And unlike traditional stress support supplements, GABA can promote a healthy stress response in as little as 30 minutes.

GABA and occasional stress
In a placebo-controlled clinical study, healthy individuals who had an admitted fear of heights took 100 mg of GABA before crossing a suspension bridge.1
Researchers assessed participants’ physiological stress response by measuring salivary immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels, a type of specialized protein that’s part of the immune system. Here’s why: during stressful events, salivary IgA levels decline.2-5 But participants taking GABA maintained already-normal salivary IgA levels compared to placebo.1
GABA and difficult (stress-inducing) tasks
Stressful tasks can take their toll. A single blind, cross-over, randomized, placebo-controlled study placed a stress-load on subjects by assigning them 10 minutes of an arithmetic test as well as 5 minutes of an auditory target detection task (DT), imposed together. Three sessions were performed at around 10, 40, and 70 minutes after the test subjects took 100 mg of GABA or placebo, respectively.6
A subjective survey then measured six different aspects of stress, from tension to anger response. Researchers also measured brain waves of the test subjects.6
Those taking GABA reported feeling less taxed after completing their tasks than when taking placebo. Brainwave measurements also indicated a healthy physiological response to stress in the GABA group.6
Heart rate and “fight or flight” response
Another randomized, double-blind, crossover, placebo controlled? stress study (also using arithmetic) measured heart rate to determine sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system responses to stress after taking GABA. The study found that GABA produced a quick return to a healthy baseline after response to stress.7
GABA and sleep support*
GABA can support healthy sleep, as well. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, healthy adults between the ages of 24 and 57 years old took 100 mg of GABA 30 minutes before going to bed. Over the course of one week, multiple sleep quality index scores were collected.8
The GABA group reported falling asleep faster than those in the placebo group. They also reported not feeling drowsy the next day.8
