  • Taking Responsibility for Living Well

    By Donna Caruso

No one, absolutely no one, tells Montel Williams what to do. Not even a doctor. And especially not a doctor who tells him he has multiple sclerosis (MS) and should start preparing to die.

It's about 10 years since Williams, 52, received his diagnosis of MS. In that time, he has not only transformed his life with the use of supplements, replacement hormones, a healthy diet, exercise, and spiritual practices, he also continues to lead an exceptionally active life. Williams is truly a role model not only for those with MS, but for anyone facing a serious illness or health problem. His method in a nutshell: inform yourself and fight back!

In the process, Williams, a renowned Emmy award-winning talk show host for 17 years, has expanded his career to become an author, health care advocate, and living example of what being your own person can accomplish. His new book, Living Well Emotionally (New American Library, 2009), a follow-up to the earlier best-selling Living Well, explores the powerful connection between mind and body, pointing the way to a more positive, healthy lifestyle.

  • Optimal Oral Health Reduces Degenerative Diseases

    By Julius Goepp, MD

Despite regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleaning, it is challenging to optimally suppress plaque buildup.

In an intriguing development, researchers have discovered two unique strains of bacteria that can prevent the buildup of plaque and biofilm on our teeth.

As we have come to learn, plaque-induced gum disease causes more than just halitosis (bad breath). Chronically inflamed gums lead to a host of degenerative disorders including atherosclerosis, diabetes, and cancer.

After years of study, a new oral probiotic lozenge may change how millions can achieve optimal oral health.

  • B6 Vitamers: Natural Protection Against the Complications of Diabetes and Accelerated Aging

    By Julius Goepp, MD

As you read this sentence, a destructive biochemical process known as glycation is occurring in your body.

Glycation arises when simple sugars react with proteins to generate protein "cross-links." These cross-linked proteins are called advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Cataract development in the lens of the eye, the drop in kidney function, damage to the delicate endothelial cell layer of our blood vessels, and the unsightly sagging and wrinkling of our skin are all examples of glycation.

In addition to protein glycation, many health-conscious people do not realize that lipid glycation plays an important role in the development of age-associated complications. In fact, a high rate of lipid glycation occurs in the plasma of patients with type 2 diabetes. Since accelerated aging is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes, the cellular toxicity caused by lipid glycation must be minimized to reduce the risk of complications of aging as well as diabetes.

Late last year, Life Extension was able to offer members access to pyridoxamine, a form of vitamin B6 well-validated to reduce glycation. Regrettably, a pharmaceutical company's petition to have the regulatory status of pyridoxamine changed from a dietary supplement to an investigational new drug was very recently published by the FDA.

However, the good news is that another form of vitamin B6, pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (a different B6 vitamer), offers anti-glycation benefits that scientific studies suggest may have similar properties as pyridoxamine plus better inhibitory effects against lipid glycation.

  • Featured Product: Advanced Oral Hygiene

The human mouth is teeming with bacteria. Brushing, flossing, and traditional dental care often aren't enough to escape the health risks of too much of the wrong kind of bacteria in the human mouth. With oral probiotics, we may be able to prevent or at least control the growth of the dangerous organisms where they originate.

Advanced Oral Hygiene is a new oral probiotic that provides the beneficial bacteria that can help block harmful bacteria that first develop in the mouth. This sophisticated oral probiotic therapy allows the healthy and naturally occurring organisms found in the body to out-compete the harmful bacteria.

    Multiple health benefits

Advanced Oral Hygiene contains BLIS K12™ and Bacillus coagulans, a unique blend of two oral probiotics, which aim to triumph over many of the chronic threats to our health caused by oral microbes that may pose harm to the body. BLIS K12™ (Streptococcus salivarius) and Bacillus coagulans (GanedenBC30®) organisms naturally survive in human tissue, maximizing their health-promoting potential and providing help with the regulation of inflammation and cell destruction caused by the dangerous germs that originate in the mouth.

Regular use of Advanced Oral Hygiene could make a significant impact in protecting oral health, which in turn can strengthen the immune system, ease inflammation, and help the body maintain good health.

Poor oral health is associated with risk factors throughout the entire body

Inflammation in the mouth can translate to poor health in other parts of the body. Traditionally, poor mouth conditions have a tendency to become chronic, producing a steady elevation of inflammation in other parts of the body that receive high blood flow--thereby "seeding" the entire system with circulating "cytokines." These cytokines, or "chemical messengers," produce inflammatory responses in tissues far distant from the mouth, and affect cellular behavior critical to the immune system's defense. When cytokine levels continue to increase—the occurrence of even more acute inflammation can also increase.

Advanced Oral Hygiene can offer relief and modulate the body's inflammatory response, making these "good" microorganisms found in the K12 and GanedenBC30® strain the ideal candidates for preventing inflammatory conditions in the body.5

    Live life longer and healthier

In combination with a rigorous oral hygiene regime, Advanced Oral Hygiene provides the body with beneficial bacteria to naturally help protect the immune system and prevent harmful bacteria from colonizing throughout the body.
