- Introducing LutiMax - a natural bioflavonoid supplement containing a high concentration of luteolin. Luteolin is a super-nutrient from a class of naturally occurring molecules known as bioflavonoids. According to the Life Extension Foundation, when ranked in order of potency, luteolin was more effective than vitamin C and seven other flavonoids in reducing oxidative damage. That is why Life Extension includes luteolin in its flagship supplement, Life Extension Mix, as well as in its anti-aging supplement Mitochondrial Energy Optimizer.
While the health benefits of this important nutrient, as well as many others, are harder to relate to than those affecting weight loss, blood sugar reduction and lean muscle mass development -- all things we can see and consciously experience, they are by no means less important!
For example, in the article Barbequer Beware!, luteolin is discussed as one of a very small number of nutrients that can mitigate the carcinogenic effects of barbecue and other high-heat cooking. The implications of this one fact are many.
Luteolin neutralizes free radicals such as superoxide, the hydroxyl radical, and other reactive oxygen compounds to help reduce oxidative stress and may help reduce inflammation, regulate hyperactive immune systems, and promote healthy carbohydrate metabolism.

- Beyond Vitamins - A Closer Look at Life Extension Mix
The primary reason that people take dietary supplements is to obtain concentrated doses of beneficial nutrients that are found in fruits and vegetables.
Consuming lots of fruits and vegetables dramatically lowers the risk of degenerative disease. This fact has been documented in epidemiological studies showing that people are healthier if they incorporate more of the right kinds of plants into their diet.
In addition to the epidemiological data, researchers have evaluated the molecular effects that fruits and vegetables possess in protecting against cellular damage. These findings provide biologic mechanisms to explain why those who eat a plant-rich diet have such low incidences of chronic disease.
The problem is that few people consistently eat enough fruits and vegetables to protect against aging-related diseases such as stroke, cancer, macular degeneration and heart attack.(1) This is one reason why vitamin supplements are becoming so popular in the United States. The concern about multi-vitamin formulas, however, is that they do not provide all the vital plant components needed to maintain good health.
In 1985, The Life Extension Foundation introduced the first multi-nutrient formula that included disease-preventing extracts from plants. Over the years, an enormous amount research data has confirmed the health benefits of these types of plant extracts.
Scientists have identified new fruit and vegetable extracts that protect cells against the deleterious effects of aging. In response to these findings, the Life Extension Mix multi-nutrient formula has incorporated these new disease-preventing agents from plants.

- Barbequer Beware!
By Terri Mitchell
They're lurking in your favorite foods - barbequed chicken, smoky ribs, hamburgers. Even gravy is suspect. Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) are not funny. A good dose will give a rat cancer within weeks. Like your steak charred on the outside? How about a nice grilled salmon? Sound good? Read on.
Heterocyclic amines are brought to us by the same chemistry that gave us free radicals, and they’re just about as welcome. These little molecules are created when heat breaks up amino acids and creatinine. High heat is the worst. HCAs are not free radicals themselves, but they provoke them. And they do things just as bad or worse. There’s a bunch of different types, and researchers are beginning to think that these little devils are one reason meat-eaters are at risk for certain types of cancer. HCAs cause DNA mutations, especially in the colon. The liver and breasts are other well-studied targets for HCAs, but any organ is susceptible.

- Newly Discovered Benefits of Aspirin
Aspirin - Remarkable Research Uncovers Lifesaving Benefits Beyond Cardiovascular Protection
Life Extension, always at the forefront in uncovering the latest scientific and medical breakthroughs for our members, recommended aspirin therapy for cardiovascular protection long before this practice became a standard treatment by cardiologists and other doctors. Life Extension continues to closely scrutinize ongoing scientific research associated with aspirin. Recently, scientists have uncovered tantalizing evidence suggesting that aspirin may help prevent skin cancer and reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
The common thread linking aspirin’s beneficial effects on colorectal cancer, skin cancer, and Alzheimer's appears to be its remarkable ability to reduce excess inflammation and promote healthy blood flow. Today, medical science is confirming what Life Extension has known for some time — that chronic inflammation underlies many of the most lethal degenerative diseases.
Cells throughout the body manufacture hormone-like substances called prostaglandins, which are involved in fever, inflammation, and pain, as well as thromboxanes, which help regulate blood vessel tone, platelet aggregation, and clot formation.1,2
The fatty acid arachidonic acid is transformed into prostaglandins and thromboxanes through the action of the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes. Aspirin works by irreversibly disabling the COX enzymes so that they can no longer produce prosta-glandins and thromboxanes.3-5
By reducing prostaglandin and thromboxane production, aspirin decreases inflammation, pain, fever, and blood clotting. As people grow older, they commonly experience increased inflammation as well as a greater prevalence of undesirable blood-clotting tendencies. Scientists believe that increased oxidative stress and greater levels of pro-inflammatory mediators may induce these changes in aging adults.6,7 Aspirin’s demonstrated ability to reduce inflammation may play a key role in helping to counteract many of the adverse biochemical changes that accompany aging. These very same properties also make aspirin a powerful weapon against many major diseases, including cardiovascular disease and cancer.

- The Sunscreen Paradox - Popular Misconceptions About Skin Cancer Prevention
By Steven V. Joyal, MD
People apply sunscreen to protect against sunburn, skin aging, and skin cancer. Because of the way sunscreen products are labeled by FDA mandate, consumers are often confused about which ingredients they need to achieve optimal protection against the sun’s damaging and deadly rays.
Fortunately, scientific data have emerged indicating that health-conscious individuals can achieve broad-spectrum protection against the increasing onslaught of ultraviolet light penetrating our atmosphere.
Like clockwork, the sound bites occur on television news programs at the start of the summer season:
“To prevent skin cancer and premature aging of the skin, apply sunscreen before going out in the sun.”
Well known to scientists, physicians, and the average person alike, sun exposure is the main environmental risk factor for skin cancer,1 and sunburn is a well-established risk factor for skin cancer.2
Sun exposure in the form of ultraviolet light not only accelerates skin aging, but can also result in debilitating disfigurement from skin cancer. Some types of skin cancer can even lead to premature death. Furthermore, we are in the midst of a veritable epidemic of skin cancer. The incidence of basal and squamous cell carcinoma is increasing, as is the occurrence of deadly malignant melanoma, a dangerous form of skin cancer that develops in the pigment-producing cells of the skin, known as melanocytes.
Conventional wisdom indicates that, in addition to avoiding sun exposure, sunscreen is your best bet for preventing skin cancer. However, the sun protection factor (SPF) rating system used by the FDA to regulate sunscreen products has an inherent flaw that renders its ratings dangerously inaccurate. This may create a false and potentially disastrous sense of security in sunscreen users.
