Gastritis is a general term for gastrointestinal inflammation that covers any irritation of the gastrointestinal tract lining by the gastric secretions. These can range in severity from occasional acid indigestion to chronic acid reflux disease to potentially life-threatening peptic or duodenal ulcers. An ulcer is the ultimate failure of the mucosal lining of the gastrointestinal tract, when the stomach actually begins to "digest" a hole in itself.
Gastritis, however, is not always a symptom of excessive stomach acid secretion. Paradoxically, it may also be a symptom of insufficient stomach acid. If not enough stomach acid is produced to fully digest the stomach contents, "fermentation acidity" may be experienced as acid indigestion.
In the popular mind that has been shaped by pharmaceutical company advertising, however, all acid indigestion is the same. It always calls for alkalizing the stomach, which does work after a fashion.
People either take an over-the-counter remedy like Tums to alkalize their stomach acid or get their MD to prescribe an H2 blocker such as Zantac, which squelches stomach acid production. While both relieve acid indigestion symptoms, they may lead to much more significant digestive problems in the long run. A chronically alkaline pH in the stomach over stimulates the parietal cells, causing them to work harder and eventually become exhausted.
Alkalizing the stomach reduces the efficiency of protein digestion, which may lead to a variety of problems, potentially including fibromyalgia. An alkaline condition in the stomach also inhibits a major bodily defense against bacterial and fungal infection, including Helicobacter pylori, the bacteria strongly implicated as the major cause of ulcers.
Bio-Design H.D.A. provides a better way by helping without alkalizing the stomach.
H.D.A. is an herbal formula with cabbage powder, a traditional naturopathic remedy for ulcers. Raw cabbage, in its fresh, powdered or extracted forms, has been shown in clinical studies to promote the healing of gastric and duodenal ulcers. Research has found that patient's ulcer pain was relieved in a few days, while ulceration was substantially healed within three weeks. Vitamin U (for Ulcer) is the archaic name for the ulcer-healing factor found in cabbage. It has since been identified as an amino acid, methylmethioninesulfonium bromide. This amino acid improves cellular metabolism and helps to protect the mucosal tissue of the digestive tract.
The other herbal ingredients in the H.D.A. formula are known, in naturopathic medicine, to variously provide soothing, cleansing, and healing actions. Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme extracted from pineapple, is a well-known natural anti-inflammatory.
Acetyl-d-glucosamine is a nutrient precursor in the production of collagen and has been found to promote the regeneration and repair of damaged mucosal cells.
Initially take HDA as needed for digestive tract discomfort, then reduce to 2 capsules three times daily to maintain gastritis relief.
