~ Folic Acid, Homocysteine, and Male Fertility

Folic Acid May Improve Male Fertility

Folic acid reduces homocysteine and reduces the incidence of birth defects in women, but apparently has an important complementary role for men.

Low levels of folic acid have been implicated in male infertility in a new study. The study found that men with low sperm counts also had low levels of folic acid in their semen. (See: Wallock LM, et al. Fertility and Sterility 2001:75:252-259.)

SuperNutrition Men's Blend and all SuperNutrition adult multi-vitamins, except our only low potency formula Longevity, contain 1,000 mcg of folic acid, the highest amount found in any supplement.

For women, note that while 400 mcg reduces birth defects by 45%, 4,000 mcg reduces birth defects by 72%. (See: Daly, LA, et al. Folate levels and neural tube defects. Implications for prevention. JAMA 1995 Dec 6;274(21):1698-702 and Van Allen, et al. Recommendations on the use of folic acid supplementation to prevent the recurrence of neural tube defects. Clinical Teratology Committee, Canadian College of Medical Geneticists. CMAJ 1993 Nov 1;149(9):1239-43.

Ask your qualified nutritionally-oriented medical doctor before increasing your folic acid, and always take Vitamin B12 with folic acid, as folic acid may mask pernicious anemia, a Vitamin B12 deficiency syndrome.

Many take 3 to 4,000 mcg of folic acid per day to reduce homocysteine for better long-term cardiovascular protection. I have my homocysteine level checked regularly in blood tests and it has always been shown to be maintained the low 20% of normal, which is very good. I recommend checking things like homocysteine in blood tests with a nutritionally-oriented Western Medical doctor at least once per year, if you are able.
