  • Is Your Bottled Water Killing You?

    By William Davis, MD

Based on the poor quality of what comes out of the municipal tap, health-conscious people often rely on bottled or home-filtered water for their drinking needs. While most filtered and bottled waters are free of cancer-causing contaminants, they provide little or no magnesium. Even most tap water is devoid of this critical mineral.

The implications of this widespread magnesium deficiency are frightening, in as much as communities with low magnesium content in drinking water show increased rates of sudden death.

Magnesium plays hundreds of crucial roles in the body, including suppressing unstable heart rhythms, controlling blood pressure, maintaining insulin sensitivity, and regulating over 300 enzymes. Attaining optimal magnesium levels is an absolute requirement for good health.

In this article, we examine magnesium's importance to human health, how changes in the way we obtain our drinking water have contributed to widespread magnesium deficiencies, and strategies you can use to optimize your magnesium intake through dietary sources, better bottled waters, and nutritional supplementation.

  • Preserving Memory and Cognition

    By Laurie Barclay, MD

In numerous studies, neuroscientists warn that the United States and other Western nations face a tidal wave of mind-destroying dementia that threatens to decimate the "golden years" of the soon-to-be-retired baby-boom generation.

In the US alone, dementia is already epidemic among the elderly: nearly one third of adults over the age of 80 are literally losing their minds.1,2 This shockingly high number is expected to skyrocket further in the coming decades.

More evidence that Alzheimer's is spreading like wildfire comes from the landmark Cognitive Function and Aging study, which found that fully one third of elderly subjects who died with no clinical signs of dementia had autopsy evidence of Alzheimer's disease. In other words, these adults were likely spared the afflictions of Alzheimer's only because they died of other causes before memory loss became apparent.

The good news is that declining brain function during aging is not inevitable. In fact, "senile" dementias may merely reflect wholly preventable biochemical processes that are commonly seen with advancing age. Middle-aged adults who have yet to experience the onset of forgetfulness or mild cognitive impairment should act now to avoid it. Those who are already experiencing these symptoms should implement strategies to prevent the onset of full-blown dementia.

  • Pomegranate Reverses Atherosclerosis and Slows the Progression of Prostate Cancer

    By Dave Tuttle

Research from around the globe confirms that pomegranate is one of nature's most concentrated sources of antioxidants.1-3 Extraordinary new findings indicate that compounds in pomegranate can do what scientists previously thought to be virtually impossible - namely, reverse the process of atherosclerosis.

These studies indicate that pomegranate confers unprecedented cardiovascular protection by restoring endothelial health, lowering blood pressure, and protecting low-density lipoprotein (LDL) from damaging oxidation. Pomegranate also appears to fight several of the most common forms of cancer, slowing the progression of prostate cancer and suppressing the growth of colon, breast, and lung cancer cells. Pomegranate even appears to shield against unsightly signs of aging by supporting the health of the skin's underlying matrix.

The good news for consumers is that pomegranate's remarkable health benefits can now be obtained in the form of affordable, highly concentrated extracts.

  • Eating Your Way to Prostate Cancer

    By William Faloon

Cancer cells lurk in the prostate glands of most aging men, yet only one in six men is ever diagnosed with prostate cancer. If one looks at what is required for a single cancer cell to develop into a detectable tumor, it becomes obvious that natural barriers exist to protect people against full-blown cancer.

Unfortunately, the dietary choices of most men living in the modern Western world circumvent the body's natural protective barriers. The end result is that we unwittingly provide biological fuel for existing prostate cancer cells to propagate and metastasize.

Good news: If you understand the biological roles of diet and specific nutrients, you'll be able to achieve a considerable amount of control over whether isolated cancer cells in your prostate gland will ever show up as a clinically diagnosed disease.

So keep reading, because what you learn here can make a difference between bad news and good news in your future.

  • Featured Product: 5-Loxin, A Powerful Anti-Inflammatory - The typical American diet is loaded with foods that contain arachidonic acid (like egg yolk, red meat, poultry, and dairy products) or stimulate the production of excess arachidonic acid in the body (foods rich in high-glycemic carbohydrates, saturated fats, and omega-6 fatty acids).

Scientific studies show that, along with normal aging, excess arachidonic acid ignites a biochemical cascade that increases levels of the 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) enzyme, which can induce undesirable effects in cells throughout the body. This cascade culminates in the excess accumulation of leukotriene B4, a proinflammatory compound that attacks the joints, the arterial wall, and other tissues.

In India, extracts from the Boswellia plant have been used for centuries as anti-inflammatory agents. Recent human studies have confirmed that a specific Boswellia extract known as AKBA (3-O-acetyl-11 keto-ß-boswellic acid) selectively inhibits 5-LOX. Unlike other boswellic acids that only partially inhibit 5-LOX, AKBA binds directly to 5-LOX, effectively suppressing its pro-inflammatory activity, thus forming the basis for 5-Loxin.
