SCOTS scientists have made a major breakthrough which could lead to the eradication of cancer, diabetes and cystic fibrosis.
Researchers at Dundee University have found a direct link between harmful proteins that trigger the three killer diseases.
Their pioneering work which confounds previous scientific thinking that the proteins were unrelated could eventually lead to the development of new drugs that can 'switch off' the fatal triggers.
The discovery, reported today in the scientific journal Cell, could herald hope of a cure for millions of sufferers around the world.
Professor Angus Lamond, of the university's School of Life Sciences, which led the research, said: 'Cancer is a disease caused by cells dividing and multiplying out of control.
'This latest advance is a wonderful example of how genetic research in Dundee is leading the way in understanding how cells divide and therefore helps us understand the basic causes of cancer.
'Future cancer treatments will build upon this improved understanding of what has gone wrong.' Earlier this year, another team of scientists at Dundee University discovered a genetic mutation that can cause allergic reactions leading to asthma, eczema, hayfever and peanut intolerance.
Work has already begun to develop treatments and even cures for the ailments.
